Death toll rises to 4 in launch collision on Meghna River

The death toll has risen to four following the collision between the launches Zakir Samrat-3 and Adventure-9 on the Meghna River in Chandpur amid dense fog.

The incident occurred around 2:00 am on Friday (December 25) near the Harina area of Chandpur Sadar upazila.

The victims have been identified as Abdul Gani, 38, son of Sirajul Bepari of Lalmohan Upazila in Bhola; Md Saju, 45, son of Md Kalu, from the same area; Rina, 35, wife of Milon Mia and daughter of Moktar Hossain; and Md Hanif, 60, son of Amir Hossain of Charfession Upazila.

According to the River Police, of the two individuals who were seriously injured, one died on the spot inside the launch, while the other succumbed to injuries en route to Dhaka near Mohanpur. The two launches involved in the incident, along with the bodies of the deceased, are currently at Sadarghat in Dhaka.

Additional IGP of the River Police, Kusum Dewan, told Jago News on Friday (26 December) afternoon that five people were injured in the collision. Among them, one is receiving treatment at Mitford Hospital, another at Pangu Hospital, while the remaining three received primary treatment at Mitford Hospital before being discharged.

The River Police chief also stated that legal action regarding the incident is underway.
