An employee was killed in a fire on a tourist vessel bound for St Martin’s Island in the Bakkhali River in Cox's Bazar on Saturday morning, December 27.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
As many as 12 individuals were rescued from the vessel, said Hossain Islam Bahadur, general secretary of the Sea Cruise Operators Owners Association of Bangladesh.
The body of an unidentified employee was recovered from the ship's ground floor, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Shahidul Alam.
Firefighters are struggling to control the fire, he said, adding that further details can be provided once the blaze is doused.
The ship, The Atlantic Cruise, caught fire as it was heading towards Nunia Chara BIWTA ghat in the town around 7:00 am, Hossain Islam said.
Later, two units of fire extinguishers from Cox's Bazar Fire Service rushed to the spot and began work to tame the fire.
Deputy Commissioner MA Mannan visited the spot and informed that a five-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
