Attorney General Asaduzzaman resigns

Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, the 17th Attorney General of Bangladesh, has resigned from his post to contest the 13th national parliamentary election.

Asaduzzaman submitted his resignation letter to the President through the Attorney General’s Office on Saturday (December 27), citing personal reasons.

Deputy Attorney General Zahirul Islam Sumon told Jago News that the Attorney General has already submitted his resignation letter, which will be forwarded to the President shortly. “He has resigned to contest the upcoming national elections,” he said.

Administrative Officer of the Attorney General’s Office Md Nasir Uddin said the resignation letter was received between 9:00 pm and 9:30 pm. “The letter mentions his inability to continue his duties due to personal reasons. It will be sent to the Ministry of Law on Sunday (December 28) morning,” he added.

Earlier, on November 5, Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman told journalists that he would contest the 13th national parliamentary elections from the Jhenaidah-1 constituency.

Responding to journalists’ questions at his office that day, Asaduzzaman said, “I will contest the election. I have sought nomination there (Jhenaidah-1). I am still serving as Attorney General. I will resign from the post when the time comes and then contest the election.”

Following the fall of the Awami League government during the July mass uprising, senior Supreme Court lawyer Md Asaduzzaman was appointed the country’s 17th Attorney General on August 8 last year. He was appointed by President Md Shahabuddin. Asaduzzaman previously served as the Human Rights Affairs Secretary of the BNP central committee.
