EC enrols Tarique, daughter Zaima in electoral roll

The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday approved the inclusion of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his daughter Zaima Rahman in the electoral roll, a day after the completion of their national identity registration and voter enrolment applications.

The approval came amid the ongoing election schedule, under which any new inclusion in the voter list requires explicit clearance from the commission.

Earlier, on Saturday, December 27, Tarique Rahman went to the Election Commission office in Agargaon, where he completed the necessary procedures to register as a voter and apply for a national identity card. The BNP had earlier informed that Tarique Rahman would become a voter on December 27, and the Election Commission authorities had made all preparations accordingly.

On Saturday, National Identity Registration Division Director General SM Humayun Kabir said it would take a maximum of 24 hours to issue Tarique Rahman’s national identity card after collecting his fingerprints, iris scans and other biometric information.

Confirming Sunday’s development, the EC’s public relations wing said the commission approved the enrolment following completion of all required formalities.
