Former adviser Mahfuj Alam will not participate in the upcoming national parliamentary elections, his brother Mahbub Alam, joint convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), confirmed.
Mahbub made the announcement around 12:30 am on Monday (29 December) after a nomination paper was collected on behalf of Mahfuj Alam from the Lakshmipur-1 (Ramganj) constituency. Mahbub himself has also collected a nomination paper from the same constituency.
He said that someone, acting on impulse, had collected the nomination paper in Mahfuj Alam’s name without his consent. “Mahfuj is embarrassed by this. He will not submit the nomination paper and will not contest the elections. I will contest on behalf of the NCP as part of the Islamic like-minded alliance,” Mahbub said.
According to sources at the district election office, besides Mahfuj and Mahbub, 14 other aspirants have collected nomination papers from the Lakshmipur-1 (Ramganj) constituency.
