Obstructing police during polls will lead to arrest, warns IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has warned that anyone obstructing police duties during the upcoming national elections will be arrested and produced before the court, stressing that law and order must be maintained at all costs.

He issued the directive while addressing the monthly crime review meeting at Police Headquarters on Monday, December 29, attended by field-level police officers from across the country.

The IGP said any election-related disorder must be dealt with immediately through strict legal action. He instructed police to increase their visible presence ahead of the polls to ensure a peaceful pre-election environment, including intensified patrols and strengthened searches at checkpoints.

Baharul Alam also directed officers to step up efforts to recover weapons looted from police stations and to widely publicise the government-announced reward for the recovery of such arms.

All Metropolitan Police Commissioners, Range Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) and District Superintendents of Police joined the meeting virtually. Senior police officials, including Additional Inspector General (Administration) AKM Awlad Hossain, Additional Inspector General (Crime and Operations) Khondaker Rafiqul Islam, DIG (Operations) Md Rezaul Karim and DIG (Confidential) Md Kamrul Ahsan, were present at Police Headquarters.

The meeting reviewed the overall crime situation for November 2025, including the execution of arrest warrants, progress in investigations and trials, conviction rates and other key law enforcement issues.
