Modi expresses condolences over Khaleda’s death

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Bangladesh’s former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

In a message posted on his official X account, Modi said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of the three-time prime minister in Dhaka and extended his condolences to her family and the people of Bangladesh.

“Deeply saddened by the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. Our heartfelt condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh,” Modi wrote.

He also offered prayers for her bereaved family, saying, “May Almighty God grant her family the strength to bear this tragic loss.”

Highlighting Khaleda Zia’s historic role, the Indian prime minister noted her significance as Bangladesh’s first female prime minister and recalled her contributions to bilateral relations.

“As the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her significant contribution to the development of Bangladesh and India–Bangladesh relations will always be remembered,” he said.

Modi also reflected on his personal interaction with the BNP leader, recalling their meeting in Dhaka a decade ago.

“I remember my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015. We hope her vision and legacy will guide our partnership. May her departed soul rest in peace,” he added.

Khaleda Zia, a three-time prime minister and one of the most influential figures in Bangladesh’s political history, passed away in Dhaka on Tuesday at the age of 80.
