Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed her condolences over the death of BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
In a condolence message posted on the Awami League’s official Facebook page on Tuesday, Hasina said she was deeply saddened by Khaleda Zia’s passing.
“I express my deep sorrow over the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia,” the message read.
Sheikh Hasina acknowledged Khaleda Zia’s role in the country’s political history, describing her contributions as significant.
“Her contribution as the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh and her role in the movement to establish democracy are immense. Her death has caused an irreparable loss to contemporary Bangladeshi politics and to the leadership of the BNP,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina also offered prayers for the late leader, saying she prayed for the eternal peace of Begum Khaleda Zia.
Extending condolences to the bereaved family, she said: “I express my deepest sympathies to her son Tarique Rahman and other family members.”
“I pray that Almighty Allah grants her family and the leaders and activists of the BNP the strength to overcome this grief,” the message added.
Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh’s first female prime minister and a three-time head of government, passed away in Dhaka on Tuesday at the age of 80.
