Tk 5000 fine for selling cigarette near schools, hospitals

The government has promulgated the Smoking and Tobacco Products Use (Control) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, imposing fines of up to Tk 5 thousand for selling tobacco products near educational institutions and other designated areas.

The ordinance was issued by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Ministry of Law on Tuesday night, December 30, amending the Smoking and Tobacco Products Use (Control) Act, 2005.

According to the ordinance, the sale of tobacco and tobacco products is prohibited within 100 meters of educational institutions, hospitals, clinics, sports facilities, and children’s parks.

It further states that the government or local government authorities may extend the restricted boundary through general or special orders as deemed necessary.

Violators of the provision will face a fine of up to Tk 5 thousand. In cases of repeat or multiple offences, the penalty will be doubled.
