Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Thursday said his party is committed to fair and participatory elections and wants to move forward on the path of political unity laid down by late BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
He made the remarks after visiting the BNP’s Gulshan office to convey condolences to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and his family following Khaleda Zia’s death.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman met Tarique Rahman and other family members and later signed the condolence book kept at the party office.
Speaking to reporters afterward, the Jamaat chief said his party believes in dialogue with all political forces in the interest of the country and the upcoming national election.
“We are determined to hold discussions with political parties before forming the government after the election,” he said.
“In the future, we want to work together for the good of the country. We want to remain on the ground of unity that Begum Zia created and work jointly to restore a healthy political environment.”
He added that BNP leaders had also expressed similar views. “After the election and before forming the government, we will sit together again and work for the country’s interest,” he said.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman left the BNP chairperson’s office after speaking to the media.
