999 receives 381 noise complaints over New Year festivities

A large number of complaints over noise pollution were lodged with the National Emergency Service 999 across the country due to fireworks and loud music during the English New Year celebrations of 2026.

According to 999 authorities, a total of 381 phone calls related to noise pollution were received over two days—December 31, the eve of the New Year, and January 1, New Year’s Day. Of these, 96 complaints came from the Dhaka metropolitan area, while 285 were received from other parts of the country.

Police Inspector (Media and Public Relations) of 999 Anwar Sattar shared the information on Thursday (January 1).

He said most of the complaints were related to the use of fireworks, loud music, and the excessive use of microphones. In response to each complaint, 999 informed the relevant police stations, and immediate measures were taken to control the situation and provide remedies.

He added that law enforcement agencies remained on round-the-clock alert to ensure public safety and maintain a peaceful environment.

Meanwhile, the authorities concerned have urged citizens to be more conscious while celebrating festivals and to comply with the law to prevent noise pollution.
