BGB man 'dies from self-inflicted gunshot wounds'

A member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) reportedly died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds along Phulbari border in Kurigram in the early hours of Friday, January 1.

The deceased was identified as Md Nasim Uddin, 24, son of Babul Mandal, from Jhenaidah.

Confirming the matter, BGB-15 Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam said that Nasim had just donned his uniform for a routine night patrol when he stepped east of the barracks and shot himself with his service rifle issued by the government.

Other BGB personnel rushed to the scene after hearing the shot and took him to Phulbari Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Kurigram Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

He might have committed suicide as he had been suffering from depression due to family issues, the BGB official suspected.

An investigation into the incident was underway, he added.
