Teacher detained by CUCSU leaders released after nine hours

A teacher, who was detained by leaders of the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) over allegations of opposing the July mass uprising, was released after nearly nine hours of detention.

The teacher was identified as Hasan Mohammad Roman, a faculty member of the Department of Law at the university. He left the administrative building and exited the campus in the proctor’s car.

Earlier in the day, during admission exams, CUCSU leaders had attempted to detain him. Sensing their presence, Shuvo tried to evade them by taking a back road instead of the main path in front of the law department. However, the students caught up with him and brought him to the proctor’s office in a rickshaw.

The students alleged that he supported the killings during the July mass uprising and acted as an accomplice of the Awami fascist forces.

Responding to the allegations, Shuvo said, “There is no evidence that I opposed the July mass uprising or assisted in such activities. If there is, please show me the proof. I was not involved in any crime. I was wrongfully detained.”

When asked if any case had been filed, CUCSU General Secretary Sayeed Bin Habib said, “When our leaders tried to file a case at Hathazari police station, we were told that cases cannot be registered without permission from higher authorities. We raised the matter with the administration, and they said that action will be taken based on the investigation report.”

CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Hossain Shahid Sarwardy said, “We have received multiple complaints against him. An investigation is currently ongoing, and the university administration will decide on the matter at the upcoming syndicate meeting.”
