Restaurant worker arrested in Banasree schoolgirl murder

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a man in connection with the murder of a schoolgirl, Fatema Akter Nili, whose throat-slitted body was recovered from a house in South Banashree, Dhaka. The arrestee has been identified as Milon, a restaurant worker.

MZM Intekhab Chowdhury, Wing Commander and Director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing, confirmed the arrest on Monday (12 January) morning. He said Milon was taken into custody as a suspicious accused in the sensational case and that further legal procedures are underway.

According to investigators, Milon worked at the restaurant owned by Nili’s father. Nili, who was alone in the house at the time, was killed when Milon allegedly slit her throat. The motive behind the murder has not yet been determined.

The victim’s body was recovered on Saturday afternoon from E Block, Preetam Villa, South Banashree. Khilgaon police said they were informed about the incident through a call to the national emergency number 999. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shafikul Islam confirmed the recovery.

Fatema Akter, 17, was a tenth-grade student at Banashree Radiant School and College. She lived with her parents, a brother, and a sister. The family’s ancestral home is in Lakhai, Habiganj. Her father, Sojib Mia, runs a restaurant in Banashree. Two days before the incident, Nili’s parents and brother had traveled to their village in Habiganj, leaving Nili and her sister in Dhaka. On the afternoon of the murder, Nili’s sister went to the gym and, upon returning, found Nili’s body.

A case was filed on Saturday night, naming unknown individuals as the accused in the murder.
