Tejgaon College students block roads, traffic at standstill

Students of Tejgaon College in the capital blocked roads and staged a protest on Wednesday (14 January), demanding justice for the murder of their fellow student, Sakibul Hasan Rana. The programme began around 11:45 am.

The protesting students blocked the main Indira Road as well as the down ramp of the Indira Road elevated expressway, bringing traffic to a standstill. As a result, severe traffic congestion developed on surrounding roads. Police diverted vehicles at the entrance to Indira Road towards Bijoy Sarani and, in coordination with the expressway authorities, kept the Indira Road ramp closed.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic–Tejgaon Division) Md Rafiqul Islam told Jago News that students were blocking the road and traffic movement had come to a halt. He said police had spoken with the protesters, who assured them they would end the programme and clear the road shortly.

According to sources, on the afternoon of 6 December, several individuals were consuming drugs on the roof of Tejgaon College’s hostel. When Sakib and his friends tried to stop them, an altercation ensued. Later that night, a meeting was held to resolve the issue, during which students chased leaders of the Chhatra Dal.

During the incident, Sakib was struck on the head with a hammer in a kitchen alley. He was first admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later transferred to a private hospital in Malibagh. He succumbed to his injuries on 10 December, four days after the attack.
