2 shot dead in Cumilla clash over dominance

Two people have been killed and at least 10 others injured in a clash between two rival groups in Cumilla's Nangalkot over establishing supremacy.

The deceased were identified as Saleh Ahmed Member, 65, and Delwar Hossain Nayan, 30, residents of Aliara village under Bakshganj union in the upazila.

The clash ensued between the supporters of Abul Khayer and Saleh Ahmed, former members of Bakshganj union parishad and residents of Aliara village, on Friday afternoon, January 16, said Rashedul Haque Chowdhury, Additional Superintendent of Police, Cumilla.

Bakshganj union parishad chairman Md Abdur Rashid Bhuiyan said a former UP member named Alauddin was gunned down on August 5 last year, and clashes occurred in the area on several occasions over the murder.

In continuation of this, a deadly clash erupted this afternoon, leading to the deaths of two individuals, he said.

"I have been holding meetings with both groups for the last four days to refrain them from being involved in further violence, but they did not pay heed to me," Rashid Bhuiyan added.

Nangalkot police station's officer-in-charge (OC) Arifur Rahman could not be reached for comments.
