Jamaat-e-Islami nominated candidate and district amir Md Ruhul Amin has been served a show-cause notice by the Election Investigation and Judicial Committee for alleged violations of the election code of conduct in Chuadanga-2 constituency ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
The notice was issued to him by Nasir Hossain, head of the constituency’s Election Investigation and Judicial Committee and judge of Jibannagar Sessions Court.
Ruhul Amin has been asked to appear before the committee at 10:30am on January 19 and submit a written explanation.
The action follows a complaint filed by MA Sabur, chief election agent of BNP candidate and district BNP president Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu.
The complaint alleged that Ruhul Amin made provocative remarks during a Jamaat-e-Islami workshop held at Karpasdanga of Damurhuda upazila in the district on January 12, instructing party activists to 'keep bamboo sticks ready and use them if necessary.'
A video of the speech circulating on social media was submitted as evidence.
Contacted, Ruhul Amin denied the allegations, saying his remarks were misinterpreted and aimed at preventing vote rigging. 'References to bamboo sticks were part of a plan to ensure a free and fair election, not to threaten or incite violence,' he said.
The committee has asked him to explain why a report recommending action to the Election Commission should not be submitted.
