NCP signals pullback as confidence in EC wavers

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has sent a sharp warning shot into the election landscape, saying it may pull back from the national polls as its confidence in the Election Commission (EC) continues to erode.

NCP central election management committee chairman Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan delivered the message on Sunday night at a press conference at the party’s temporary office in Bangla Motor.

His remarks have added fresh uncertainty to an already unsettled political field.

Asif Mahmud said the EC has failed to gain the trust of political parties or the public, a failure he described as alarming ahead of a national vote.

He argued that the Commission’s handling of key processes has already cast doubt on its ability to guarantee an election that all sides can accept.

“We are reaching a point where we must reconsider whether participating in this election is even meaningful,” he said. “The Election Commission has not earned the confidence required to conduct a fair contest. The way things are moving, we are deeply concerned that the EC will not be able to deliver a credible election in Bangladesh.”

He said the NCP entered the electoral process expecting transparency and equal treatment, but is now seeing the opposite. The party, he added, will review its position if the EC does not take immediate steps to restore trust.

“We are watching the situation closely. If the process continues like this, we will be forced to rethink our participation,” he warned.

With the NCP raising the possibility of withdrawal, pressure is expected to mount on the EC as political parties assess whether the election environment is slipping further out of balance.
