BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the party has confidence in the Election Commission, expressing hope that it would be able to conduct the upcoming election competently.
He made the remarks after paying tribute at Zia Udyan in the capital on the occasion of the 90th birth anniversary of martyred president Ziaur Rahman.
Fakhrul said the people of Bangladesh remember Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman every year because they continue to move forward by following the path he showed. He added that the party renewed its pledge to work more firmly towards establishing a liberal democratic Bangladesh.
Referring to the announcement of the election schedule for February 12, Fakhrul said that following a student-led mass uprising that forced “fascist Hasina” to flee, BNP has taken a fresh vow to rebuild a ruined economy and institutionalise democracy in the country. He said BNP and its affiliated and associate organisations have pledged to implement the ideals of Shaheed Zia in Bangladesh.
Asked about the cancellation of many nominations and controversies surrounding postal ballots, Fakhrul said such issues usually arise during the scrutiny process and that this was nothing new. He said BNP has so far observed that the Election Commission has been working with reasonable competence.
He added that the party had raised a few concerns with the Commission the previous day and expressed confidence that the Election Commission would be able to conduct the election properly.
The programme was attended by BNP Standing Committee members Dr Moyeen Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy; Chairperson’s Adviser Aman Ullah Aman; Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi; Joint Secretary General Habib Un Nabi Khan Sohel; independent candidate for Dhaka-12 Saiful Alam Nirob; and leaders from the party’s various associate and affiliated organisations, including Dhaka North Juba Dal Vice-President Fakhrul Islam Robin.
