University of Asia Pacific suspends classes sine die

Following protests by students over Facebook posts concerning female students wearing the niqab, the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) has announced the indefinite suspension of all classes, a day after dismissing two teachers amid the unrest.

The information was disclosed in an emergency notice signed by the acting registrar of the university on Monday night (January 19). The notice was also emailed to students.

According to the notice, the University of Asia Pacific informed all concerned that the current situation is not conducive to the continuation of regular academic activities. It said the university authorities are actively engaging in discussions with relevant stakeholders to resolve the issue and resume normal academic operations as soon as possible.

“In view of the prevailing situation, all classes at the University of Asia Pacific are hereby suspended until further notice,” the notice added.

Earlier, on Sunday (January 18), two teachers were dismissed through an emergency notice signed by the university registrar. The dismissed teachers are Assistant Professor Layeka Bashir of the Department of Basic Science and Humanities and Associate Professor Dr ASM Mohsin of the same department.
