Police, RMG workers clash in Gazipur

Clashes erupted between police and garment factory workers in Konabari, Gazipur city, during a protest over an eight-point set of demands. Around 10 industrial police personnel were injured in the incident.

The confrontation occurred on Saturday morning, January 24, outside the Jamuna Denims Ltd factory in Konabari.

Protesting workers claimed they had presented eight demands to the management, which were not accepted. They alleged that police were called in and used tear gas and sound grenades against them, injuring more than 50 workers. The injured were later taken to various hospitals for treatment.

Attempts to contact factory management for comment were unsuccessful, as the authorities declined to make any statement. A notice was posted at the main gate at 11:00 am announcing the indefinite closure of the factory.

Police stated that workers had blocked the road and refused to disperse. When the situation escalated, and officers came under attack with bricks, police used tear gas and sound grenades to bring the crowd under control. The factory was subsequently declared closed indefinitely.

Md Morshed Zaman, Inspector of Gazipur Industrial Police-2, Konabari Zone, said tear gas and sound grenades were deployed to disperse the unruly crowd. Police remain deployed outside the factory to maintain order and normalcy.
