Jamaat reaches secret entente with US: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami has reached a secret entente with the United States, warning that such an understanding could pose risks to Bangladesh’s peace, stability and sovereignty.

He made the remarks while addressing an election roadshow at Jathibhanga High School ground in Shukanpukhuri Union of Thakurgaon-1 constituency on Saturday.

Mirza Fakhrul said a report published in The Washington Post has raised questions about covert communications between Jamaat and the US. “This is not good for Bangladesh in any way,” he said, adding that the BNP would formally seek clarification from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ascertain the truth behind the report.

Describing the alleged engagement as a matter of national concern, the BNP leader said such developments could have long-term implications for law and order and the country’s sovereignty if left unaddressed.

Referring to the ongoing situation in Palestine, Mirza Fakhrul said that at a time when innocent people are being killed, any secret political manoeuvring involving foreign powers is deeply troubling. “Any conspiracy carried out by keeping the people of Bangladesh in the dark cannot be acceptable,” he said.

He warned that if any activity is found to be against national interests, the people of Bangladesh would reject it outright.

Earlier in the day, Mirza Fakhrul took part in mass mobilisations and road meetings in different areas of Shukanpukhuri Union. He later addressed several election roadshows in neighbouring Auliapur Union.

Leaders and activists from BNP’s district and upazila units were present at the programmes, which also drew large gatherings of local residents, reflecting growing political engagement in the constituency ahead of the elections.
