BCL leader Saddam finally gets bail after wife’s suicide, son’s death

The High Court on Monday granted bail to Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Jewel Hasan Saddam, days after his wife took her own life after killing their nine-month-old son, reportedly out of despair over her inability to secure his release.

The bail order was issued by a bench comprising Justices JBM Hasan and Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan. Supreme Court lawyer Saeed Ahmed Raja confirmed the development.

Saddam’s wife, Kaniz Subarna Swarnali, 22, and their infant son, Sejad Hasan Nazif, were found dead on Friday, January 23, at their home in Saberkhanda village of Bagerhat Sadar upazila. Family members said Swarnali killed her child before ending her own life.

Despite the tragedy, Saddam remained in custody at Jashore Central Jail and was unable to attend their funerals.

On Saturday, January 24, the bodies were brought to the jail, where he was allowed to bid a final farewell to his wife and child amid scenes of deep grief.
