RU female student found hanging in Rajshahi home

The police recovered the hanging body of a female student of Rajshahi University (RU) from her residence in the Meherchandi area under Chandrima Police Station in Rajshahi city on Friday evening, January 30.

The deceased was identified as Zubaida Islam Iti, a third-year student of Social Work department of the university.

According to family sources, Iti had been living at the residence with her mother. She was found hanging inside her room and taken to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where the attending physician declared her dead upon arrival.

Confirming the matter, RU Proctor Professor Mahbubur Rahman said preliminary evidence suggests the death may have been a case of suicide.

“However, the exact cause will be determined following investigation,” he said.

Dr Shankar Kumar Biswas, physician in charge of the emergency department at RMCH, said the student was brought to the hospital at around 6:50 pm. After completion of legal formalities, the body was sent to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

Professor Golam Kibria Ferdous, chairman of the Social Work department, said the cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Mental stress or depression may have been a contributing factor, he said, adding that the body will be handed over to the family after the autopsy.
