Biman MD, wife land in jail over child abuse

A Dhaka court on Monday has sent Shafiqur Rahman, Managing Director (MD) and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, his wife Bithi, and two domestic workers to jail in connection with the abuse of an 11-year-old child employed in their household.

The accused were produced before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam by SI Romel Mia of Uttara West Police Station.

Following the investigation officer’s request, the court rejected bail applications and ordered that the four remain in custody.

According to the complaint, the child’s father, Golam Mostofa, sent his daughter to work at the Rahman residence in June 2025 after being promised that all her expenses, including her marriage, would be covered. The father last saw her on November 2 last year and was reportedly prevented from meeting her afterward.

On January 31 this year, Bithi allegedly called Mostofa, claiming the girl was unwell and asked him to pick her up. When he arrived around 7:00 pm, he found his daughter with serious injuries on her hands and other parts of her body. She was reportedly unable to speak clearly.

The girl was admitted to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where she disclosed that she had been subjected to repeated beatings and burns from a hot iron while at the household.

Confirming the matter, Uttara West Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Ahmed said that the arrests were made early Monday following the filing of the abuse case.

In addition to Shafiqur Rahman and his wife, the other accused are the household domestic workers Rupali Khatun and Sufia Begum, he added.
