A writ petition challenging the candidacy of BNP-nominated candidate Dr MA Quayum in the Dhaka-11 constituency, over allegations of concealing information about foreign citizenship, has been summarily dismissed by the High Court. As a result, there is no legal obstacle to MA Quayum’s participation in the election, lawyers said.
The writ was filed by Nahid Islam, a candidate of the 11-party alliance and convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), who is also contesting the election in the constituency.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Md Asif Hasan passed the order on Tuesday (February 3).
Advocate Zahirul Islam Musa and Advocate Ali Azgar Sharifi represented Nahid Islam during the hearing.
A total of 10 candidates are contesting the Dhaka-11 seat, which comprises parts of the capital’s Badda, Bhatara, Rampura and Hatirjheel thanas. The constituency has 439,078 voters, including 222,877 male and 216,198 female voters. There are also three voters registered as third gender.
