BNP vows to ensure state honour, recognition for Freedom Fighters

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has pledged to ensure due state honour and social recognition for Freedom Fighters if it comes to power through the people's vote in the upcoming election.

"Contributions of Freedom Fighters in every field of the country will be officially recognized. Based on a comprehensive state-led survey, an accurate list of martyrs of the War of Liberation will be prepared to ensure Freedom Fighters receive due state honour and recognition," BNP said in its election manifesto this afternoon.

The manifesto was announced by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman at a function in the ballroom of Hotel Sonargaon in the capital with its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in the chair.

The correct history of the Liberation War will be presented, its memory preserved, and Freedom Fighter entrepreneurs will be encouraged to invest, the manifesto added.

"Through the great Liberation War, independence and sovereignty were achieved in 1971. Democracy was restored in 1975 through the Sepoy-People's Revolution and again in 1990 through the Student Mass Uprising," the manifesto  continued.

Assuring comprehensive support to the families of July fighters and martyrs, the manifesto stated: "Government institutions will be named after martyrs of the July Mass Uprising and the 16-year anti-fascist movement, in their respective areas. Those who were injured in the pro-democracy movement-those who became crippled or lost their eyesight-will also receive recognition, proper medical treatment, and employment assistance. A separate department under the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs will be established for their welfare."
