Won't question political sincerity of past 54 years: Shafiqur

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said that he does not intend to question the sincerity of those who have been involved in politics over the past 54 years, noting that the people of the country are best placed to judge the country’s political record.

He made the remarks while addressing an election rally held at the Government Rajendra College ground in Faridpur on Friday night, February 6.

Jamaat-e-Islami Faridpur Sadar upazila unit organised the rally chaired by its amir Mohammad Jasim Uddin.

Shafiqur said Bangladesh is facing the consequences of decades of political governance and is now approaching what he described as a critical moment ahead of the upcoming election.

Previous political leaders had contributed to the nation according to their ability and intentions.

“We do not want to question anyone’s sincerity,” he said. “What was delivered and what was not delivered over the years is known to the 180 million people of this country.”

Calling for a people-centred administration, Shafiqur said he opposed one-party, dynastic, or group-based rule and advocated for a united Bangladesh. He added that divisions based on religion, ethnicity, or race should not be allowed.

He also criticised political repression, stating that Bangladesh should not be a country where people are killed, forcibly disappeared, detained in secret facilities, or harassed through false legal cases because of political differences.

Shafiqur further said his party opposed discrimination against minority communities, widespread unemployment among educated youth, and corruption within the justice system.

Justice should not depend on wealth, influence, or political affiliation, he added.
