Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has described any firearms as a potential threat in the context of the upcoming national parliamentary elections.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (February 10) at a press briefing at the Police Headquarters Media Centre, the IGP made the remarks in response to a question about firearms looted from police stations. He said that any firearms pose a threat and noted that arms also enter the country through various means. “All necessary measures have been taken to address this,” he added.
To ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections, strict regulations have been imposed on legally owned firearms. As a result, 27,995 legal firearms have been deposited. Measures have also been taken to ensure voting occurs peacefully and in a festive atmosphere.
The IGP further stated that 187,603 police personnel will be deployed for the election. Referring to security arrangements, he said measures will be implemented in three phases. For enhanced security, technology will be extensively used: CCTV cameras have been installed in 90% of polling centers, body cameras will be deployed in high-risk locations, and police superintendents will use drones.
