The government has announced financial assistance and housing support for the family of Dipu Chandra Das, a young man from the Hindu community who was killed in a mob attack on December 18, 2025, in Bhaluka of Mymensingh.
According to the Chief Adviser’s Office, Tk 25 lakh will be allocated to construct a house for the family through the National Housing Authority, based on their needs. In addition, cash assistance will be provided – Tk 10 lakh each to Dipu Das’s father and wife – while a fixed deposit receipt (FDR) of Tk 5 lakh will be created to secure the future of his child.
The assistance will be implemented under the supervision of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Tarakanda.
The incident, which drew nationwide attention and was widely reported as communal violence, occurred in the Square Masterbari area. Dipu Das was attacked by a mob following allegations of making ‘offensive’ remarks.
Earlier, on December 23, 2025, Education Adviser Dr CR Abrar visited the family home in Mokamiakanda village of Banihala Union in Tarakanda upazila on the advice of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. During the visit, he conveyed the government’s sympathy and solidarity with the bereaved family.
As Dipu Das was the sole earning member, the government assured comprehensive support to ensure the family’s security, including the construction of a permanent house.
Speaking on Tuesday, Dr Abrar said the killing was a “brutal crime with no justification” and stressed that the assistance “cannot compensate for the value of a human life.” He added that justice would be ensured.
Calling the incident a national shame, the education adviser said only justice could address the wrongdoing. He also emphasised that while peaceful expression of opinions must be respected, no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.
Law enforcement agencies have so far arrested 12 people directly involved in the incident, while the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have reiterated that all those responsible will be brought to justice through due legal process.
