Police have detained Belal Uddin, the amir of the Thakurgaon district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, along with around Tk 50 lakh in cash.
He was detained from Saidpur Airport in Nilphamari on Wednesday (February 11) around 12:00 pm.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazmul Alam of Saidpur Police Station said Belal Uddin was detained with around Tk 50 lakh, and the counting of the money is still ongoing. Belal Uddin reportedly told the police that the money came from his business.
According to police and airport sources, Belal Uddin landed in Saidpur on a Novoair flight from Dhaka. During a search of the bag he was carrying, a large amount of cash was recovered.
Superintendent of Police of Nilphamari Sheikh Zahidul Islam said the detained individual is the amir of the Thakurgaon district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami. During preliminary questioning, the recovered amount was reported to be around Tk 50 lakh. The cash is currently being counted, and he is being questioned about its source and intended use.
Given the election atmosphere, the district police and relevant intelligence agencies are treating the matter of carrying such a large amount of cash with seriousness. Police said further details will be disclosed after the completion of legal procedures.
