After counting the cash recovered from him, the police have confirmed that Thakurgaon district Jamaat Amir Belal Uddin Pradhan was carrying Tk 74 lakh when he was detained at Saidpur Airport on Wednesday, a day before the national election.
Saidpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rezaul Karim said the total amount recovered from Belal Uddin has been verified at Tk 74 lakh.
Legal proceedings have been initiated, and he has been formally arrested. According to authorities, the army detained him at the airport based on intelligence information and informed the police.
Police and airport sources said Belal Uddin arrived in Saidpur on a Novoair flight from Dhaka. During a search of his luggage, the cash was recovered.
In a preliminary interrogation, Belal Uddin stated that he is a teacher residing in Hajipara, Thakurgaon Sadar. When asked about the money, he claimed it was “50-60 lakhs, mainly for business, garments.”
Police said he is being questioned about the source and purpose of the recovered funds.
Authorities described the case as highly sensitive, given the timing of the election and the unusually large sum of money involved.
The district police, along with relevant intelligence agencies, are investigating the matter thoroughly.
