Tk 10.5 lakh seized from candidate’s vehicle in Chattogram

Early Wednesday, joint forces arrested three people and seized a microbus belonging to an independent candidate along with Tk 10.49 lakh in Chandanaish Municipality, Chattogram.

The arrestees were identified as Md Enamul Haque, Emran, and the vehicle’s driver.

Ilias Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Chandanaish Police Station, said a team of police and army personnel intercepted the microbus owned by independent candidate Advocate Md Mizanul Haque, contesting from Chattogram-14 with the Football symbol, at Abdul Bari Haat around midnight. During the search, Tk 10.49 lakh was recovered from the vehicle.

The three were taken into custody in connection with the seizure. In preliminary interrogation, they claimed the cash was being carried for the candidate’s polling agents.

The driver could not produce valid vehicle documents, stating that the microbus had been taken on a requisition slip but had not been properly reported to the authorities, raising further questions about the legitimacy of the transport.

Authorities are investigating the matter further to determine the source and purpose of the money ahead of the national election.
