Australia crush Ireland by 67 runs in T20 World Cup opener

Australia began their T20 World Cup campaign with an emphatic 67-run victory over Ireland at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, overcoming early setbacks to post a challenging total and restrict their opponents.

Electing to bat, Australia lost Travis Head early for just 6, but Josh Inglis (37 off 17) and Cameron Green (21 off 11) forged key partnerships to stabilize the innings. Marcus Stoinis played a powerful 45 off 29 balls, while Glenn Maxwell added a quick 9. The innings was boosted further by unbeaten contributions from Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett (11 runs), helping Australia reach 182 for 6 in their 20 overs.

Ireland’s reply never gained momentum. Captain Paul Stirling retired hurt after facing just one ball, and wickets fell at regular intervals. George Dockrell top-scored with 41 off 29 balls, but the team was bowled out for 115 in 16.5 overs. Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa were the pick of the Australian bowlers. Mark Adair claimed two wickets for Ireland, while Matthew Rensh, Dockrell, and Harry Tector took one each.

The win marks a strong start for Australia in the tournament, demonstrating depth in both batting and bowling despite injury concerns.
