BNP to seek Hasina’s extradition under India treaty

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said the party intends to initiate steps to bring former prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh under the existing extradition treaty with India to face trial over ongoing investigations.

Speaking to reporters in front of the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office on Friday, February 13, Salahuddin said any move would be carried out through legal procedures and coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He noted that multiple investigations involving Sheikh Hasina are currently underway and alleged that various accusations have been raised against the Awami League leadership. “Under the extradition agreement with the Indian government, necessary steps will be taken to bring her back to face trial,” he said.

Referring to the national elections, Salahuddin described the polls as an important milestone in the country’s democratic process. He said that, apart from a few isolated incidents, voting was largely peaceful and marked by strong voter participation.

The BNP leader expressed optimism that the new parliament would reflect public expectations and emerge as one of the most effective legislative bodies since independence. He outlined three major priorities for the incoming government: strengthening the rule of law, accelerating economic recovery and combating corruption.

Salahuddin also said the party’s electoral victory had been widely anticipated, citing significant public enthusiasm around BNP chairman Tarique Rahman during the campaign.

According to him, the oath-taking of newly elected members of parliament will proceed in line with constitutional provisions once the official gazette notification of the election results is issued.
