Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman described the party’s performance in the recent national elections as a “foundation” rather than a setback, despite falling short of forming a government.
Addressing citizens in a statement, Dr Shafiqur Rahman expressed profound gratitude to volunteers and supporters who worked tirelessly over the months, many of whom faced intimidation and harassment while exercising their democratic rights. “Your courage has strengthened our democracy,” he said in the statement posted on his verified Facebook page.
The Jamaat supremo highlighted that the party won 77 seats, nearly quadrupling its parliamentary presence and emerging as one of the strongest opposition blocs in modern Bangladeshi politics. Drawing on historical precedent, he noted that political fortunes can shift, recalling how the BNP recovered from just 30 seats in 2008 to return to power in 2026.
Dr Shafiqur Rahman stressed that Jamaat-e-Islami’s movement is about more than a single election. “It is about strengthening democratic culture, protecting citizens’ rights, and building a just and accountable state,” he said.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to peaceful and principled politics, pledging to hold the government accountable while contributing constructively to national progress. “Our commitment to principled, peaceful politics remains unshaken,” he added.
The statement positions Jamaat-e-Islami as a key parliamentary opposition force, signalling its intention to play a vigilant and constructive role in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
