Heads of govts of India, China, 11 other countries to be invited

Heads of governments from 13 countries, including India, China and Pakistan, have been invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh’s next government next Tuesday.

A senior official of the interim administration confirmed the development on Saturday night, saying formal invitations have already been sent.

The new cabinet, to be formed under the leadership of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, is scheduled to take oath on Tuesday afternoon at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad. President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath of the new cabinet.

Security and protocol preparations are underway ahead of the event.

The BNP-led alliance secured more than a two-thirds majority in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections held on February 12, paving the way for the formation of a new government.

According to officials involved in the process, the newly elected members of parliament will take the oath earlier the same day in the morning. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin will administer the oath.

Sources at the Office of the Chief Adviser to the interim government and the Ministry of Law confirmed that diplomatic outreach is ongoing to ensure the presence of foreign dignitaries as well as local guests.

Authorities are also planning to tighten security across the capital in view of the high-profile event.
