ICT set March 4 for Rampura shooting case verdict

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has scheduled March 4 for delivering its verdict in the case involving the shooting of Amir Hossain, who was hanging from a roof cornice in Rampura during the July Mass Uprising, and the killings of two others.

The tribunal’s bench announced the verdict date on Sunday, February 15.

The five accused in the case are Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Khilgaon Zone Md Rashedul Islam, former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rampura Police Station Md Moshiur Rahman, former Sub-Inspector Tariqul Islam Bhuiya, and former Assistant Sub-Inspector of Rampura Police Outpost Chanchal Chandra Sarkar.

According to the prosecution, on July 19, 2024, Amir Hossain was returning home after Jumma prayers when he became trapped in clashes near his residence. Police opened fire, forcing him to seek refuge on the fourth floor of an under-construction building. Officers pursued him, repeatedly ordering him to jump while aiming firearms at him.

In fear for his life, Amir clung to construction rods on the third floor, where a police officer fired six shots, hitting both his legs. He later fell to the third floor and was taken to a local hospital, surviving the attack. On the same day, police shootings in Rampura’s Banshree area claimed the lives of Nadim and Maya Islam.

The trial formally began after the tribunal framed charges against the five accused on September 18, 2025. Prosecutor Faruk Ahmad filed formal charges on August 7,2025, and the investigation report was submitted on July 31, 2025.

Prosecutors Mohammad Mizanul Islam and Gazi MH Tamim argued that police, under direct orders from senior officials, carried out widespread killings during the July–August uprising and sought the maximum punishment for all five accused.

Evidence presented in the case included eyewitness testimonies, video footage, and official documents, which prosecutors said clearly established the involvement of the accused.
