BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has decided to vacate the Bogura-6 parliamentary seat and retain Dhaka-17 after winning both constituencies in the 13th national parliamentary elections.
Tarique has sent a letter to the Election Commission (EC) informing them of his decision to retain Dhaka-17. The EC is now in the process of declaring the Bogura-6 seat vacant.
Senior Secretary of the EC, Akhtar Ahmed, said on Monday that the commission has received the letter, though the official gazette notification is yet to be issued.
According to the Representation of the People Order (RPO), Section 19(1)(b), a candidate may contest and be elected from multiple seats in the same general e13lection.
Section 19(2) requires that candidates elected from more than one seat must notify the EC in writing within 30 days after the gazette publication which seat they intend to retain.
If the decision is not submitted within the prescribed period, the remaining seat(s) will be declared vacant in accordance with the law.
