The BNP Parliamentary Party (BPP) on Tuesday elected party Chairman Tarique Rahman as the Leader of the House, clearing the way for him to form the next government as Prime Minister.
The decision was taken at the first meeting of the BPP held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters.
Fakhrul said the parliamentary party also decided that no BNP lawmaker will accept duty-free cars or government plots, describing it as a move to set a different standard in public life.
Earlier in the day, the newly elected BNP members of the 13th National Parliament took the oath at around 10:45 am at the Parliament House. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath.
Following the oath-taking, the BNP parliamentary party formally elected Tarique Rahman as Leader of the House and prime minister-designate.
Later in the afternoon, at 4 pm, Tarique Rahman and members of the new cabinet are scheduled to take oath before President Md Shahabuddin at a special ceremony at the South Plaza of the Parliament House.
The Cabinet Division is expected to issue a gazette notification in the evening detailing the distribution of portfolios among the new ministers.
