A Dhaka court sentenced housemaid Suravi Akter Nahid to death for the brutal killing of two women in Dhanmondi six years ago.
Seventh Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Judge Towhida Akter handed down the verdict on Tuesday, February 17.
The court also fined Suravi Tk 50,000, with an additional three months’ imprisonment in case of non-payment. Another domestic worker, Bachchu Mia, was acquitted as the prosecution failed to prove any charges against him.
According to the case details, the incident occurred at a fifth-floor flat in the ‘Lobelia House’ building in Dhanmondi on the night of November 1, 2019, where the bloodied bodies of Afroza Begum, 65, and her housemaid Diti, 18, were found. Both were killed by strangulation.
Afroza Begum was the mother-in-law of industrialist Kazi Monir Uddin Tarim. Two days later, her daughter Dilruba Sultana Ruba filed the murder case.
After investigation, PBI officer Mojibur Rahman filed charges on February 1, 2022, against Suravi Akter Nahid and Bachchu Mia. The court framed charges on October 11, 2022, and during the trial, 25 out of 32 witnesses were examined.
The court noted that Suravi took the housemaid position with ambitions for a better life and later executed the killings in a premeditated manner.
Bachchu Mia was acquitted, as he was regarded as a trusted household worker and no evidence linked him to the crime.
