The authorities of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) has expelled one of its students from the university and taken disciplinary action against eight others following the harassment of a female student on social media.
RUET disciplinary committee member secretary Professor Dr Md Rabiul Islam Sarkar confirmed the matter on Tuesday afternoon, February 17.
The expelled, Suman Majumdar, is a student of the Computer Engineering and Technology Department under its 2024–25 academic session.
The eight other students involved received varying punishments under Section 6 of the RUET Disciplinary Ordinance, based on the findings of an investigation committee probing the sexual harassment allegations.
Three of the eight students were expelled for three academic years for assisting the offence, while five others received one-year expulsions for instigating the incident. All eight were also permanently removed from university residential halls, and the administration has decided not to issue them character certificates.
Professor Dr Rabiul Islam Sarkar, Director of Student Welfare, said, “The safety and dignity of all students, particularly female students, is our highest priority.
The administration acted immediately upon receiving the complaint, and the investigation committee’s recommendations have been fully implemented, he said, adding that the university has a zero-tolerance policy toward harassment, and such behaviour has no place on campus.
