A Dhaka court has sentenced four men to life term imprisonment in a gang rape case filed in 2009 in Kamrangirchar.
The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman handed down the verdict on Sunday, February 22.
The convicts are Shahidul Islam, Nizam, Monir Hossain Sentu, and Saiful Islam.
In addition to life sentences, each convict was fined Tk 100,000, with a default sentence of six months' rigorous imprisonment.
The court also issued a warrant for Saiful’s arrest. The other three will serve their sentences in prison, with previous detention periods taken into account.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred on September 26, 2009, when the victim went out with a friend in Ashrafabad, Kamrangirchar. Several assailants forcibly took her onto a boat in the Buriganga River, assaulted her, and later confined her in a house.
The victim was rescued by her family, admitted to hospital, and a formal complaint was filed with Kamrangirchar police station in this connection.
The initial investigation was conducted by Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam Azad, who recorded witness statements, inspected the scene, and collected evidence. The victim also underwent a medical examination.
Later, Sub-Inspector Md Shafiqul Islam Shikdar continued the investigation, verified previous records, and compiled additional evidence.
Based on the investigation, charges were filed under Section 9(3) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.
