Jamaat-e-Islami Amir and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman has criticised recent comments by President Mohammed Shahabuddin, alleging that key issues were suppressed in his latest interview.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday evening, Shafiqur said the President’s recent statements did not align with what he had previously conveyed to political leaders and the nation regarding the resignation of the former Prime Minister.
“What he told the leaders present about the resignation and what he later told the nation, he did not acknowledge in his current speech. And he did not say anything about what he is saying now,” the Jamaat chief wrote.
He questioned whether the President would reconcile what “millions of people heard” at the time with his current version of events.
“The nation is not naïve. Such behaviour from the highest position of the state is unacceptable,” he added.
In a recent interview with a vernacular daily, President Shahabuddin spoke on various developments during the interim period and referred to attempts to remove him from office.
According to the interview, the President said efforts were made to unseat him, but did not succeed due to a lack of support from the BNP and the military.
Dr Shafiqur’s remarks have added to the political debate surrounding the President’s statements, with questions now being raised by opposition leaders over the consistency of official narratives regarding the events of August 5, 2024.
