Keraniganj madrasa blast: Prime accused Al Amin on 10-day remand

A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Al Amin, director of Ummal Qura International Madrasa in South Keraniganj, where a massive explosion partially collapsed the building in December last year, and the prime accused in a case filed over the incident, on a 10-day remand under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman passed the order after police produced the accused before the court and sought remand for interrogation.

Following a hearing, the court granted the plea, according to police sources.

The case stems from a powerful explosion that occurred around 10:25am on December 26 at the Ummal Qura International Madrasa in the Hasnabad Housing area of South Keraniganj.

The blast caused severe damage to the building, with parts of the walls and roof collapsing and debris scattering in the surrounding area.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Anti-Terrorism Unit’s Bomb Disposal Team, RAB, Fire Service and members of the CID Crime Scene Unit, rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation alongside evidence collection.

During a two-day operation, investigators recovered a large quantity of materials allegedly used in making explosives from a rented house of the accused.

Seized items included chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, acetone and nitric acid, containers filled with white powder, and nine improvised explosive devices wrapped in black plastic. Police also reported recovering approximately 400 litres of liquid chemicals and equipment suspected to be used for manufacturing explosives.

Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Md Liton of South Keraniganj Police Station filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The matter remains under investigation.

Police had been searching for Al Amin since the December blast, but were initially unable to trace him. Investigators recently traced his presence in a southern part of the capital and conducted raids there. Members of the Anti-Terrorism Unit arrested him on Tuesday and produced him before the court on Wednesday.
