An absentia funeral prayer was held at Dhaka University for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli attack.
The prayer was organised by the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) at VC Chattar on Sunday around 10:30pm. It was led by DUCSU Vice President Shadik Kayem.
After the prayer, participants brought out a protest procession from VC Chattar, marching through the residential hall area before gathering at the Raju Memorial Sculpture.
Addressing the rally, DUCSU VP Shadik Kayem called on Muslims worldwide, the youth, and heads of state to set aside personal and political differences and unite.
He described the United Nations as a “puppet organisation,” alleging that its major human rights charters primarily serve the interests of powerful countries and that it has failed to protect the rights of ordinary people in Palestine and Iran.
Meanwhile, members of the Shia community and local residents from Hussaini Dalan (Imambara) in Old Dhaka also staged a protest mourning Khamenei’s death.
Around 8:30pm, they brought out a procession from Hussaini Dalan and held a brief rally in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University, chanting slogans against the United States and Israel.
