Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said that a verbal proposal has been made to the main opposition party in a meeting to decide on a candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker.
Speaking to journalists following a meeting with the Prime Minister on Monday, March 2, he said the government aims to implement the July National Charter agreement, which reflects political consensus and mutual understanding.
“The Deputy Speaker can be elected on the same day as the Speaker,” Salahuddin Ahmed said. “We have made a verbal offer to the opposition party to select their candidate for the Deputy Speaker post.”
According to the July agreement, two Deputy Speaker positions were created, one of which is allocated to the opposition. The ruling party may hold both the Speaker’s position and the other Deputy Speaker post.
Clarifying earlier statements, the Home Minister said, “The Deputy Speaker will be elected from the opposition party.”
