The High Court (HC) has ordered a recount of votes cast in the Bagerhat-1 (Chitalmari, Fakirhat, and Mollahat) parliamentary constituency in the 13th national parliamentary election.
The order was issued on Thursday (March 5) by a single-member election tribunal bench headed by Justice Sheikh Zakir Hossain.
In the election held on February 12, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Maulana Mashiur Rahman won the Bagerhat-1 seat, securing 117,966 votes. His nearest rival, Bangladesh Nationalist Party-nominated candidate Kapil Krishna, received 114,590 votes. The constituency, comprising three upazilas, has 147 polling centres.
In the election, Jamaat candidates won three of the four parliamentary seats in Bagerhat district. Sheikh Manjurul Haque Rahad of Jamaat won the Bagerhat-2 (Sadar and Kachua) seat, while Abdul Alim secured victory in Bagerhat-4 (Morelganj and Sharankhola). In Bagerhat-3 (Rampal and Mongla), Sheikh Faridul Islam of the BNP emerged victorious.
