Two members of the Bangladesh Air Force died in a fire that broke out at LA Plaza, an 11-story commercial building in Mirpur-2, on Monday, March 9.
The deceased were identified as Ayesha Siddika Anannya, a resident of Saidpur in Nilphamari district, and Sheikh Rakibuzzaman of Sirajdikhan in Munshiganj.
According to the relatives of the deceased, Anaynna and Rakibuzzaman were shopping for Eid when the fire broke out, trapping them inside the building. They succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
Air Force sources said that their bodies were handed over to their family members after completing legal procedures.
Shajahan Siraj, officer of the Mirpur Fire Station, said that the fire broke out on the third floor of the building at 1:52 pm. Six units of firefighters rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control around 3:22 pm.
Many people trapped inside climbed to the rooftop, while others were stuck on various floors, he said, adding that using a turn table ladder (TTL), rescue teams evacuated 14 men and 10 women.
Two victims, one male and one female, rescued from the stairwell between the fourth and fifth floors, were sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital after suffering smoke inhalation, he added.
