A group of rickshaw and auto-rickshaw drivers surrounded and vandalised Uttara Square, a shopping mall in Uttara, alleging that a rickshaw puller had been beaten there. During the protest, they blocked the road in front of the building, creating a commotion. When police tried to control the situation, the protesters hurled brickbats, prompting authorities to fire several sound grenades.
The chase and counter-chase, which began around 12:30 am on Monday (March 15), continued until about 4:00 am in front of shopping mall in Sector 13.
According to police and local sources, the incident started around 12:30 am with an altercation between a rickshaw puller and a security guard at the mall, which later escalated into a scuffle. The confrontation quickly spread among other rickshaw pullers, who vandalised the mall and blocked the road. Police were later deployed to prevent further disruption to security and business activities.
Clashes continued for several hours, with protesters throwing brickbats at law enforcement. Authorities responded by firing sound grenades to disperse the crowd. Locals said rumours that the injured rickshaw puller was being hidden inside the building further enraged the crowd.
By 4:30 am, Officer-in-Charge of Uttara West Police Station, Kazi Rafiq Ahmed, told Jago News that the situation was under control. Additional police and members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were deployed to maintain order.
